Like everyone who grew up in the 80s, my earliest impressions of Africa were from LiveAid. When I thought of Africa, I thought of images of children with swollen bellies, poverty and sorrow. As an adult, I wanted to see Africa first-hand, and reshape that narrative. I knew there was more to see and I wanted to find the positivity and strength and love.
In November 2022, I was asked by Bristol-based charity Deki, to document their visit to Togo, where they work with rural communities. Over seven days we visited their women empowerment collectives, water projects and farming cooperatives.
Togo is one of the poorest countries in the world, and while there are families living in heartbreaking poverty, there is hope here, and kindness and love. I am forever changed by my experiences and my heart will always remain full of Togo and the people I met.
